Wiring Tip No 1(from Martin Bowtle)

Hi! Mark,
A thought occurred to me since your last message, you said that you had obtained some manuals on the Renault 5s.
I refer you to page 315 of the Haynes manual for the 1972 to Feb 1985 edition.
It took me five and a half attempts to wire up my Kindred following the relevant wiring diagrams pages. All would seem well until I got to a point close to finishing then everything went completely doo-lally. I was spitting blood and threatening murder before I sat down and coloured in all the wiring lines and traced each one from start to finish.
I finally traced it to item 64 the handbrake lever, which is earthed, which is connected via the brake master cylinder to another earth (100)
Even my basic knowledge of electricity told me that a circuit does not work from two earths. Once I deduced where the power should be supplied from I reconnected and suddenly the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and I was on the home run.
I did not have a kind thing to say about Haynes for quite a while but now I am back to cursing Renaults for changing their minds about so many parts of the Flair, even my carb does not fully match the corresponding one in that manual, I seem to have no fine mixture control whatsoever. I have got the consumption down to about 60 mpg but feel that I could do better if I could lean it out just a bit more.
I have to change a drive shaft gaiter for the MOT this month, not looking forward to that very much, only hope that I can still cope.
I hope that this news will save someone a headache but don't ask me how I connected it up in the end because I have almost completely rewired mine to work from individual circuits since, which is what I should have done in the first place.
Done almost 2,000 miles in August mainly running my grandchildren around East Anglia visiting zoos etc. A good job I set my max. annual Mileage to 5,000 on the insurance.
All the best,Marten Bowtle.
